4 Reasons to Sleep On Your Left Side

(HealthyAccess)- Experts recommend that the average adult get 7-9 hours of sleep each night. According to a report published by Scientific American, how much sleep we need depends largely on our age and health. For instance, teenagers may require anywhere from 7-11 hours of sleep each night. Babies and seniors could require more.

But how much sleep we get isn’t the only factor to consider when it comes to our health. Sleeping position also plays a role. According to the National Sleep Foundation, most people are side sleepers.

Many of us have heard that sleeping on our left side is ideal–but why is that? A look at the research shows us that there are many benefits to being a left-side sleeper. Here are four excellent reasons to start sleeping on your left side.

Better for the heart

For anyone concerned with heart health, it is suggested that sleeping on the left side could benefit the heart. Martha Jefferson of the Hospital Sleep Medicine Center reported to CNN that sleeping on the left side reduces pressure on the heart, leading to better functioning.

Improves digestion and reduces heartburn

It has also been proven to be a digestive aid. A study in The Journal of the American Medical Association found that sleeping on your left side aids in digestion, as gravity helps waste travel more easily from the small to large intestine. Researchers have found that left-side sleeping may reduce heartburn and conditions like GERD. Sleeping on your right side, however, could increase heartburn.

Reduces snoring and sleep apnea

Medical News Today explains that side sleeping helps reduce snoring, which can improve sleep quality–for ourselves and for anyone in the household who may be negatively impacted by snoring. Sleeping on the side can also improve sleep apnea by reducing breathing difficulties.

Relieves back pain

The Mayo Clinic reports that sleeping on your side can relieve back pain. For added comfort, place a pillow between the legs. This can help relieve pressure to the hips as well as provide added comfort to the back.

While it is important to get a good night’s sleep each night, it is also worth considering which sleeping position offers the most benefits. If we struggle with snoring, indigestion, or back pain, learning to sleep on our left sides could be advantageous. It could be a heart-healthy position that could lead to a peaceful night of sleep and a healthier body in the long run.
